How tourist survived life-threatening illness on safari in Namibia

I had an understanding partner to help me get through it. I wasn’t alone. I wasn’t just going to be lost in that mess. ”

— Tanya Garrett

LEBANON, NH, USA, July 17, 2019 / — Scott Garrett no longer leaves the country without his Global Rescue ( ) membership card in his wallet. Garrett’s incredible story about a life-threatening illness on safari in Namibia is a testament to why his family considers themselves lucky to have Global Rescue.

Garrett is the president of Garrett Trucking in Houston, Texas. A busy man, Garrett found time to take an adventurous vacation with his wife. Their trip took them from Houston to Dubai, Johannesburg and then Namibia.

Two days into the vacation, Garrett inhaled a mysterious airborne bacteria. His breathing became labored, he was coughing frequently and began to experience major fatigue while on safari with his wife.

Garrett remembers telling his wife, "This isn’t that big of a deal. I’ll be fine.” It wouldn’t be long until he realized just how wrong he was.

While Garrett was quick to dismiss the situation, his wife Tanya would not, as Scott's symptoms were growing serious. His kidneys were failing and some of his other organs had begun shutting down.

Fortunately, Scott and Tanya reached a hospital in time to address the bacterial infection Scott had contracted.
Distance from home combined with a life-threatening illness can result in a horrifying feeling. This was the feeling that Tanya described prior to contacting Global Rescue.

“When Global Rescue was there with me,” Tanya recalls, “I had an understanding partner to help me get through it. I wasn’t alone. I wasn’t just going to be lost in that mess. I wasn’t scared anymore.”

Thanks to Tanya’s quick decision-making and the Garrett’s Global Rescue membership, they were able to access appropriate care for Scott’s rapidly deteriorating condition. Global Rescue directed Garrett to the best nearby facility to address his life-threatening medical issues and deployed personnel to assist Tanya in overseeing her husband’s care.

Even the most cautious international travelers can quickly find themselves in life-threatening situations. Founded in 2004, Global Rescue is better than travel insurance. Different from travel insurance, Global Rescue members don’t have to get involved with the hassle of insurance claims. Exhibit by Aberson presents Julie Sneed and Jodi Walsh an exhibition of new work by both artists opening July 18th, 2019 from 6 until 8 PM.

TULSA, OK, USA, July 17, 2019 / — Exhibit by Aberson is pleased to present a selection of works from artist, Julie Sneed and ceramist Jodi Walsh opening July 18th from 6 until 8 PM at Exhibit by Aberson located at 3524B S Peoria Avenue, Tulsa OK 74105.

Both Sneed and Walsh ultimately are influenced by texture and form and inevitably that drives their artwork. For Walsh her forms are influenced by her experience of culture. For Sneed the textures arise out the natural forms apparent in an agrarian landscape. The dialogue between the artists communicates a depth and understanding of familiar form to which both are distinctly paying an homage.

Julie Sneed is a contemporary artist working in Kansas. She was born and raised on a cattle ranch in Kansas. Her experience has directly informed her figurative and abstract paintings. Julie’s work incorporates various mediums and textures that are layered to provide a visceral feel to the ethereal and floating animals that present on the canvas sometimes only as outlines. Julie’s work is in collections throughout the United States and throughout the world and selected by curators for inclusion in Best of the Best collections.

Jodi Walsh, a ceramicist, left her native country of Canada in 1967 for the Far East and Europe, a move that would influence her life and work forever. She moved to the United States in 1979. Layering clay on textured surfaces and suspending ceramic from stainless steel thread and hemp has taken her work to a new level of expression. “Once my hands touched clay it opened up a world to me that I didn’t expect. The thought of creating hand made forms from clay sent me down a path that is never ending.” Jodi Walsh is a creator of beautiful objects, including folding clay and hand-built ceramics. Inspired by the endless possibilities of fashion and design, Jodi’s work is also deeply influenced by her extensive travels. Much of the time she is influenced from places she’s lived, such as Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Europe, Africa and England to name just a few. “Each country has its own sense of style and cultural way of life,” Jodi said. “My work is calming and very minimal because of my travels.” Today, Jodi’s art remains diverse in scope and multifaceted in nature. She is not contained by size, with pieces ranging from several inches to large wall installations with thousands of supporting pieces. While Jodi has worked with various mediums over the years, her primary form is clay. She keeps her palette to mostly neutrals.“I love the entire process from the first hint of inspiration to the completed piece,” Jodi said. “I am at my best when I am creating.”

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NORTH CAROLINA, USA, July 16, 2019 / — Three headline surf events return to Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina in a span of ten days in August.

First, Aug. 16-18, one of the largest surf contests on the East Coast – the 14th annual O’Neill/Sweetwater Pro-Am Surf Fest. The Surf Fest attracts 200 professionals and amateurs from Florida to Rhode Island, with some of the pros flying in from California, Barbados, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, and Hawaii.

“You have so many good athletes that show up, and a different set of circumstances every year as far as waves and the conditions,” said Brad Beach, Event Manager. “I don’t think we’ve had a repeat pro champion in our 13 years.”

Adding to the excitement of the first-rate shortboard and longboard competition in 2019 is the addition of extreme surfing with the Red Bull Tow-At.

“Jet skis will tow the surfers into the wave,” said Beach. “We’re selecting five surfers known for their aerial skills to compete. It’ll be exciting. They’re known for flying out of the wave and doing tricks. Whoever wins that, will compete in the Red Bulls Night Rider event in Jacksonville, Florida.”

“We are super stoked to renew our partnership with Reef … one of the original sponsors of this event,” said Beach. “Reef will partner with Surfrider Foundation to keep the beach clean during Surf Fest. They’re also planning to bring in Evan Geiselman, a team rider and world-class surfer.”

O’Neill/Sweetwater also presents Saturday’s Music and Art Fest in the park, combining local musicians, arts, crafts, and family activities. “It’s one of the best side events of the Festival,” said Beach. Proceeds benefit the nonprofits Hope from Helen and the Surf Club at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Next up on Aug. 19th is Surfers Healing, an organization dedicated to enriching the lives of those with autism by exposing them to the experience of surfing. Surfers Healing is celebrating twenty-two years of providing camps at no cost to children in Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and the United States.

Izzy Paskowitz, a professional surfer and father of Isaiah, a child with autism, is the founder of Surfers Healing. When Isaiah was five, Izzy discovered the power of surf therapy for his child, inspiring him to start a camp for children with autism.

“I wanted to do something to give back,” said Paskowitz, in a recent interview on Boston public radio, WBUR. “I am so grateful for the gift that he’s [Isaiah] given me. I have the most unique life, and I get to share that with thousands of people. I love my autism family.”

Wrapping the trio of surf events Aug. 23-25 is the 7th annual Wrightsville Beach Wahine Classic, open to lady surfers of all ages. Competitors include teenie-wahines, amateurs, and professionals.

“There are only a handful of surf competitions on the East Coast for ladies,” said Jo Pickett, Event Organizer. “The Wahine Classic at Wrightsville Beach is recognized as one of the major events. The Classic offers a fun weekend at the beach for the family, and the athletes enjoy the surfing competition and building camaraderie.”

Pickett expects 90 to 100 surfers, with most coming from North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and Florida.

“Young girls are competing in increasing numbers,” said Pickett. “Surfing is now in the 2020 Olympics in Japan, with each country represented by female and male surfers.”

Blockade Runner Beach Resort, a short walk on the beach to each of these events, is a supporter and host hotel for Surfers Healing and the Wrightsville Beach Wahine Classic.

Five Unforgettable Vacation Activities Along South Carolina’s Hammock Coast

The Hammock Coast features the best the Palmetto State has to offer, providing vacationers stunning natural beauty and abundant eco-activities

GEORGETOWN, SC, US, July 15, 2019 / — South Carolina’s Hammock Coast – comprised of six coastal communities in Georgetown County – has emerged as one of the Palmetto State’s most popular vacation destinations.

Located between Charleston to the south and Myrtle Beach to the north, the Hammock Coast features the best the Palmetto State has to offer, providing vacationers stunning natural beauty and abundant eco-activities, in addition to being a foodie’s paradise.

Garden City, Murrells Inlet, Litchfield, Pawleys Island, Andrews and Georgetown makeup the Hammock Coast and collectively they deliver an unforgettable vacation experience. With the summer beach season in full swing, here are five things Hammock Coast visitors should have near the top of their to do list:

— Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park are a nature lover’s dream. Brookgreen is one of America’s top 10 gardens, according to TripAdvisor, melding art, nature and history. Huntington Beach State Park is home to some of the best bird-watching on the East Coast and a spectacular beach. Best of all, Huntington Beach and Brookgreen are located across the street from one another.

— A vacation along the coast almost mandates a trip to the water, and Rover Boat Shelling Tours has been a family favorite for years. A 40-foot pontoon boat takes passengers on an eco-tour, along smooth inland waters, to a barrier island where the Winyah Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. The scenery is stunning and the shelling is the best the South Carolina coast has to offer.

— There is no better place for golfers to channel their inner-Tiger Woods as the Hammock Coast is home to the Waccamaw Golf Trail, a collection of 12 of South Carolina’s premier courses. Highlighting the Trail’s offerings are Caledonia, True Blue and Heritage Club, all layouts that have been ranked among America’s top 100 public courses.

— Visit Front Street in historic Georgetown, a working waterfront community that was voted the nation’s “Best Coastal Small Town” by readers of USA Today/10Best. Georgetown, which is home to more 200-year-old buildings than Charleston, is rich with history and charm.

— Have dinner along Murrells Inlet’s Marshwalk, a ½-mile boardwalk constructed along a beautiful saltwater estuary. Murrells Inlet is the “Seafood Capital of South Carolina” and with eight waterfront restaurants along the Marshwalk, it only takes one meal to understand why the area earned its nickname.
