WASHINGTON, DC, USA, October 24, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — This week, the United States Senate passed the Rescuing Animals With Rewards (RAWR) Act, S. 1590, introduced by U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR), and Susan Collins (R-ME). It’s first stand-alone animal protection measure to pass both the House and the Senate in the 116th Congress. The House companion bill, H.R. 97, passed in July. The bill must go back to the House one more time for final approval.

The legislation would amend the State Department Basic Authorities Act of 1956 to authorize rewards for thwarting wildlife trafficking linked to terrorism and organized crime.

Wildlife trafficking is a major transnational crime that is estimated to generate over $10 billion a year in illegal profits, and the drivers of the enterprise are often organized, sophisticated criminal enterprises, including known terrorist organizations. Wildlife trafficking not only threatens endangered species worldwide, but also jeopardizes local security, spreads disease, undermines rule of law, fuels corruption, and damages economic development.

Jeff Merkley (D-OR). “This week, the Senate took an important step toward righting this wrong, and now I’m urging my colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives to pass this bill without delay.”

“Wildlife trafficking is a transnational crime that requires a coordinated and sustained global effort to effectively combat it,” said U.S. Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME). “The bipartisan RAWR Act will allow the State Department to offer rewards for information regarding wildlife traffickers, building upon ongoing efforts to deter this illegal activity that harms animals and threatens conservation efforts.”

The passage of the RAWR Act comes on the heels of a recent House appropriations amendment championed by Animal Wellness Action and the Animal Wellness Foundation that passed by a vote of 239 to 192 to bar imports of sport-hunted trophies from elephants and lions, both listed as threatened or endangered across their range. Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL) led that amendment and Rep. Dina Titus (D-NV), the lead sponsor of the House passed RAWR Act, supported it.

Animal Wellness also supports other legislative initiatives to stop the trade in animal parts, including the Shark Fin Trade Elimination Act and the Bear Protection Act, which seeks to stop the killing of bears for their gall bladders.

Two schools took part in the event, which featured two award-winning chefs, Rene Marquis, President of the American Culinary Federation Tampa Chapter, and Zoltan Vajna, Executive Chef of the Church of Scientology. The chefs tag-teamed to deliver the “How Healthy Food Works” workshop in which they educated children on various exotic fruits from the world over.

77 children and their teachers listened intently as Marquis and Vajna presented fruits such as the Rambutan from Malaysia, Dragon Fruit from Peru and Jackfruit from India which were cut only minutes before. The chefs discussed the importance of eating healthy, avoiding junk food and the nutritional value of each fruit before providing samples to the children to try.

Travelife, the sustainable tourism certification system, has reassessed Jade Mountain and Anse Chastanet's performance in responsibly managing their socioeconomic and environmental impacts. The resorts first achieved certification in 2017 and have worked hard to maintain the title.

Environmental concerns, sustainability and community efforts are at the epicenter of Jade Mountain and Anse Chastanet, with daily practices set up to conserve water and energy and increase recycling efforts. These include but are not restricted to the following:

-The design of Jade Mountain reinforces the connection to the natural environment with passive ventilation of the rooms and natural day-lighting. Heating and cooling of the sanctuaries (rooms) are based entirely on the natural rhythms and cycles of the world. Not being dependent on artificial cooling or lighting of the rooms decreases the use of precious energy resources and minimizes the carbon footprint of the resort.
-The exterior plaza of Jade Mountain was designed to capture all the rainwater in Koi ponds and planting areas. The plants are then harvested for use in the resort's restaurants.
-A natural coral tile was used for exterior walkways and roof areas. It is highly reflective and effectively diminishes any "heat island" effect in the local micro-climate.
-Potable water for the resorts is produced by collecting it in a reservoir that was originally constructed and used by the British and French to power the water wheels that crushed sugar cane. The reservoir was repaired after decades of not being used and now collects over 1.5 million gallons of water annually that is gravity-fed to a state-of-the-art water purification system.
-Only local, indigenous plants were used in the landscaping, which minimizes the need for watering and protects a precious resource.
-The resorts were the catalyst behind the coral reefs of St. Lucia being declared a marine reserve to protect this valuable resource.
-The resorts provide alternative transportation for its employees. On a daily basis, shuttles are scheduled hourly to transport workers from the resort to the local community, keeping carbon emissions to a minimum.
During the construction of Jade Mountain, any left-over construction materials were distributed to the local workforce for use on their own properties.
-Construction materials that were used primarily came from the island, reducing the use of fossil fuels for transportation and the resultant pollution. For example, wood used was harvested from a managed forest.
-During construction, the workers were protected through the implementation of an Indoor Air Quality plan that minimized worker's exposure to harmful airborne compounds.
-Low emitting materials (paints, adhesives, etc.) were used throughout the resorts, which effectively eliminated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are detrimental to a person's health.
-Guests are given the opportunity to learn about the resorts' sustainability programs and actively participate in environmental activities such as reef cleaning and tree planting.

The property’s sustainability performance continues to improve as new green initiatives and strategies are implemented.

A Resource Management Policy has been developed whereby energy and water consumption are routinely monitored. Recorded data analysed monthly provides clear, accurate readings that assists with detecting any malfunctions or problems requiring attention. Additional energy saving measures include the use of photovoltaic panels installed on roof tops that supply the kitchen and pool with solar energy. Hot water tanks are also heated by solar power. Furthermore, the resort uses a BMS to regulate temperatures in rooms while key cards activate lighting and power in guest rooms. These effective approaches have led to significant savings for the property.

Akoya Hotel & Spa has created its own organic kitchen garden which grows seasonal fruits and vegetables for use in restaurant kitchens. The Spa also serves organic homemade iced tea with lemongrass freshly harvested from the Akoya garden.

The hotel has partnered with the Recycling Office (Bureau Recyclage) to support the establishment of a circular economy on the island that is more respectful of the environment. The Recycling Office is a company that collects and recycles office paper, plastic bottles and metal cans in Reunion. Recycling bins have been set up for paper and plastic bottles at the property as well as collection bins for used batteries.
